Tooling Technician
Location: Romulus, Michigan
Reports To: Tooling/Production Supervisor
Employment Type: Full-Time, Onsite
Job Summary
The Tooling Technician is responsible for maintaining, repairing, setting up, and optimizing tooling used in manufacturing operations to ensure tools, dies, and fixtures perform reliably and meet production quality standards. This role supports continuous improvement, minimizes downtime, and collaborates with production, engineering, and maintenance teams to achieve efficiency and quality goals. Key Responsibilities

Job Summary
The Tooling Technician is responsible for maintaining, repairing, setting up, and optimizing tooling used in manufacturing operations to ensure tools, dies, and fixtures perform reliably and meet production quality standards. This role supports continuous improvement, minimizes downtime, and collaborates with production, engineering, and maintenance teams to achieve efficiency and quality goals. Key Responsibilities
- Perform regular preventive and corrective maintenance on tooling, molds, dies, jigs, and fixtures used in production processes.
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues with tooling equipment, diagnose problems, and implement practical solutions.
- Set up tooling for production runs, including changing inserts, pins, and components according to part prints and specifications.
- Assist with tooling repair and modification, ensuring tools operate within manufacturing tolerances and specifications.
- Use hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, indicators) to verify dimensions and adjustments.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and schematics to understand tooling requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of tooling maintenance, repairs, and inventory.
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and maintenance teams to support continuous improvement and minimize downtime.
- Ensure compliance with all safety, quality, and environmental standards.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required; technical degree or vocational training in machining, fabrication, or related field preferred.
- Previous experience (typically 1–3+ years) in tooling maintenance, manufacturing, or related industrial environment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, tool prints, and work instructions.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and precision measurement tools.
- Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
- Familiarity with safety practices and commitment to maintaining a safe work environment.
- Experience with injection molds, stamping dies, or complex tooling systems.
- Knowledge of basic machining operations and quick-change setups.
- Onsite work in a manufacturing/production facility (industrial environment).
- May require lifting, bending, and physically demanding tasks.
- Adherence to safety PPE and environmental procedures.
